VolunteerTV/WVLT Story about MS Coach Jeff Smith

September 28th, 2009

Mark Edwards with WVLT/Volunteer TV, Channel 8 in Knoxville did a great story about the effect Jeff Smith had on the school where his son attends and he coached middle school football. The text of the story is below.

Deadly complications from the flu have touched the UT football family. Jeff Smith, who was a walk-on offensive lineman out of West High School in the late 70’s, died Sunday at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Smith had been Offensive Line Coach at Grace Christian Academy, where his son plays.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — Those who knew Jeff Smith best say he was a coach’s coach, totally in his element working with the Rams’ offensive line.

“He was a great coach. It really helped a lot that he played for UT so we knew that he knew what he was talking about,” said Rams 8th grade Offensive Lineman Heath Hatmaker.

“His work ethic carried over to them and they were able to feel what he brought to the field and what he brought to practice and they fed off of his energy and his enthusiasm.” Middle School Athletic Director Tim Jinkins told WVLT.

According to school officials, Smith got sick in August, and didn’t seem to be getting any better. He missed the Thursday game on September 10th, something that started to concern the players.

“He showed up, we had a film session Friday and we watched the previous game and he showed up and sat in the hallway the whole time, didn’t come in the room. We would go out and give him high 5’s and he just wouldn’t let us near him. You know, I’m sick. I shouldn’t be touching you,” said Hatmaker.

Smith never got better and never returned to the sideline, checking himself into the hospital and eventually dying from pneumonia and flu complications.

“And that’s really the terrible thing about the flu virus is it can kill you in a variety of different ways. It weakens your defenses so you can catch a bacterial infection on top of the flu and you can end up getting another pneumonia as a complication of the flu virus,” said Dr. Mark Rasnake, Infectious Disease Consultant at UT Medical Center.

When Smith stopped coming to games and practices, the players immediately put his initials on their helmets…So their coach will be with them as the Rams seek another middle school title.

“You know I gave it all before but with him being gone just I’m going to try my absolute best to keep up the offensive line and help us win the state championship,” Hatmaker, said

Friday Night Glitches

August 29th, 2009

After a fairly smooth start last week of streaming the GCA football games live, we had unexpected problems this week. After a late start and then losing our connection a couple of times, we spoke with our streaming host and determined they were receiving corrupted packets. The source of the corruption was somewhere between our connection to the school’s internet connection and our streaming host’s server… all of which was beyond our control. Our only option when the stream went down was to reboot and start the stream again.

As a result of this problem, we are looking at remedies to avoid a similar situation in the future. Be sure to follow us (gcasports) on Twitter. If we lose the feed in the future, we will provide updates on the stream and game via Twitter.

The great thing about the technology that we are using is that it provides some really cool options for following the Rams. The bad thing is that if one link or part goes down then it can take the whole system down with it.

We appreciate your patience and sticking with us through the problems. We’ll keep working at making gcaSports and the live streaming a better experience for you.

Coach Pridemore featured in Knox News article

August 8th, 2009

The following article was published on August 8th by Jesse Smithey of KnoxNews.com

When high school basketball practice officially begins Oct. 26, Paul Pridemore may need a personal assistant.

His daily schedule will be full.

He has accepted the jobs of boys’ basketball coach and assistant athletic director at Grace Christian Academy to go along with the girls’ basketball coaching job he took there in late May.

“I’m excited about it,” said Pridemore, a boys’ assistant the past three seasons under former Grace coach Anthony Lamb. “I’ve already told both teams that neither will play second fiddle to the other. I’m going to put the time into both programs to ensure that we put the best teams out there.”

But Pridemore will only coach the boys’ team for one season.

When he replaced Craig Price as girls’ coach, he did so with the intentions of one day coaching his two daughters – who are in eighth and sixth grade – like he did his son, Cameron, a former Grace point guard who’s now a rising freshman at Lee University.

But the lead candidate to replace Lamb bowed out late in the interview process, and school officials approached Pridemore. After much deliberation and prayer, he accepted on an interim basis.

To pull off the career move, Pridemore left his job as sales manager with a local insurance agency.

“It was a natural thing for me to move into that (boys’ coaching) position,” said Pridemore, who has 24 years of coaching experience. “I know them (the players). They know me. It wouldn’t be a big change for them.

“But we’re still going to be looking for a boys’ basketball coach. I haven’t done it (coached both boys and girls teams during a season) before, but I don’t feel like I wanted to do both long term.

“This gives us time to look for a quality person that will fit the program well, and I would stay on as girls’ coach and assistant AD.”

The Rams have made back-to-back appearances in the Class A state tournament but graduated five starters from this past season.

Pridemore said Grace will take its time finding a choice for the boys’ job and if the right candidate is found, the move wouldn’t be until after the basketball season.

He added that if he felt, after a few months of double duty, that he could efficiently run both teams, he would then consider doing both full time.

“It would depend on how I felt, as well as the administration and the principal and everybody,” said Pridemore. “If I went to them and told them I would like to continue, I’m sure they would listen and discuss it.”

August 8th, 2009

Thank you for visiting our new Ram Talk Blog on GCASports.com.  We will be using this area of the website to provide you with the latest and in-depth information, news and updates about everything RAMS!

This blog will be maintained and content added not only by the GCASports staff but by GCA coaches, selected individuals in each sport and the athletic department administration.  Beginning this year, the coaches and staff will have direct access to this blog instead of having to submit the information to the GCASports.com staff and then wait for it to be posted.  Now, new information can be added as soon as it becomes available.  We believe this increased access for the coaches, etc. will make the content on the site more extensive, up to date and more valuable to everyone with an interest in Rams Athletics.

Greg Shelton will beginning reporting on the football team through this blog in the next few days. Check back often as we anticipate frequent updates from all sports.   Thank you for your support for GCASports.com.
